Do I Really Need a Root Canal?

Chances are if you’ve been told that you need a root canal, you don’t necessarily want one. But while avoiding it or putting it off may seem like a safer bet, ignoring this treatment is a very bad idea. Here’s why even if you don’t want one, you should never skip a root canal!

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure done to repair a broken or infected tooth. Your dentist will remove the damaged area of the tooth and the infected pulp, and then fill the tooth back up with an antiseptic material called gutta percha. This helps restore its structure and keeps the inside clean and free of infection, preventing it from spreading to your other teeth. It is then closed back up with a crown, allowing you to use it as you normally would.

What Happens if You Don’t Get a Root Canal?

Not getting a root canal may seem like the obvious answer to not wanting to have one in the first place, but this is a very dangerous idea. First, tooth infections do not heal on their own like many other types. They can also cause so much damage that your original tooth could require extraction instead of simply a crown.

Worse yet, the infection can spread throughout the rest of the body, including to your brain. In fact, poor oral health has been linked to several medical conditions including dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, some cancers, diabetes, stroke, respiratory infection, pregnancy issues, kidney disease and erectile dysfunction.

Do Root Canals Hurt?

One of the reasons you may be avoiding a root canal is pain. If you are concerned about discomfort from the procedure, rest assured that your dentist will ensure that your mouth is numb for it, and you will not feel anything besides some minor pressure. Once your root canal has concluded, you can expect a little bit of sensitivity for the next few days, but it can be well managed with OTC pain relievers. In fact, most patients report feeling much better (not worse) after their root canal is over!

Remember, if you are avoiding a root canal due to fear of pain or to save money, it is important to understand that this infection or decay will not repair itself, but it will likely get worse, not better. Thus, if your dentist recommends this treatment, it is in your best interest to have it performed as soon as possible.
