In the U.S., it’s estimated that 50% of adults have some form of gum disease. If you aren’t diligent with your oral hygiene, it’s easy for plaque to build up, and for bacteria to sneak into the gum layer. If you want to change your smile for the better, one of the best places to start is with making sure that your gums are in tip-top shape. Here are four things you should be doing, if you aren’t already, to make sure you have healthy gums.

#1: Swish with a Therapeutic Mouthwash

Rinsing with mouthwash has been shown to reduce plaque and tartar buildup, which lowers your risk for gum disease. Be sure that whatever mouthwash you use carries the ADA seal of approval, which represents that the product is safe and effective.

#2: Stay Away from Tobacco

This probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard that smoking is bad for you—and it won’t be the last—but it’s worth reiterating the damage that tobacco can do to your oral health. Besides its connection to oral and lung cancer, smoking weakens your immune system, making it hard to fight off minor oral infections.

#3: Floss

Here’s another one everyone knows they ought to do, but that many ignore. Flossing is important to reach food particles that can’t be brushed away. Those particles, if they remain in place, can feed bacteria that contribute to gum disease. If you’ve been slacking, why not go floss now? It could be the start of an important habit.

#4: Get Regular Dental Cleanings

No matter how thorough you are with your oral hygiene, there are places you can’t reach. Occasionally, you need to see the dentist for a professional cleaning. They’ll be able to get to those hard-to-reach spots and break up any tartar buildup that can’t be removed by brushing.

Gum disease is prevalent, but preventing it really isn’t that difficult. Just keep these few things in mind, and you shouldn’t have any issues.
